DSDC - Fitness Leader Award - Meaningful activity for people with dementia (4 day course)

Who is it for? 
Those carers who are specifically responsible for co-ordinating activities for people with dementia within a Care setting, e.g. a Care Home, but also those who manage co-ordinators and those who wish to gain key skills in designing and implementing an activities programme for people with dementia.
What skills will you gain from this course?
This course will provide you with the skills to plan, teach and assess a physical activity intervention programme in a care home environment or other environment where older people are cared for. In particular the course will provide an understanding of the range of meaningful activities for older people with dementia. 
 
It will provide knowledge and understanding of the physiological effects of ageing and dementia on the human body. It will describe and explain the adaptations that occur as a result of the onset of dementia. It will also provide evidence that supports the positive effect that regular sustained and progressive exercise can have on people with dementia.
 
At the end of the course you will be able to:
·         Identify the types of physical activities that will benefit older adults and people with dementia
·         Plan, structure, implement and assess a meaningful physical activity intervention programme for people with dementia.
·         Outline and explain the anatomical and physiological affects of ageing and dementia
Qualifications
Successful completion of this course will lead to a formal SQA qualification in “Fitness Leader:  Meaningful Activities for Older People with Dementia”
