As a key deliverable of the national knowledge management strategy Sharing Knowledge, Improving Practice, Changing Lives (NES and IRISS, 2010), SSKS provides the entire social services workforce – in public, voluntary and private sectors - for the first time with equitable access to the knowledge base, to improve care and support for people who use services.
SSKS has been available in pilot form since 2008. This latest development is a collective endeavour, supported by NHS Education for Scotland, IRISS and other organisations in the Social Services Managed Knowledge Network. Building on NHS Education for Scotland’s powerful Knowledge Network technology, SSKS provides:
• Searchable overviews and summaries of evidence and best practice from a wide range of providers, in Scotland and the UK.
• Hundreds of electronic journals and books covering many aspects of social care.
• Access to literature searching, enquiries and document requesting services for management issues.
• Collections of key resources on priority topics – e.g. dementia, alcohol and addictions.
• Current awareness to keep services up to date with new developments.
• Online community tools and community websites to help staff to share knowledge and experience - a key element of translating knowledge into practice.
SSKS has great capacity for growth. It is already expanding to include dedicated services for learning disability, dementia, care and support for older people, and Level 2 and 3 SVQs.
SSKS represents a landmark in fulfilling the Changing Lives commitment to creating a competent and confident workforce that embeds knowledge in day to day work and learning. Realising its full potential to “improve practice and change lives” depends on your active engagement and leadership, as individuals and organisations, in promotion, training and further development. We look forward to seeing you at the launch to progress use of SSKS as a vital knowledge management tool for continuous improvement and innovation throughout social services.
