SCSWIS launches “Managing falls and Fractures in Care Homes for Older People

"A good practice Self Assessment resource"

This new resource was distributed to all care homes on 28 June and is available online

A national working group have been developing a falls and fracture prevention/management self-assessment resource for care homes for older people. The national working group consisted of falls leads in NHS Boards and representatives from all care sectors and Scottish Care.

"Managing Falls and Fractures in Care Homes for Older People - a good practice self assessment resource" was launched by Michael Matheson the Minister for Public Health on Tuesday 28 June at Meldrum Gardens care home in South Lanarkshire, and it was distributed to all care homes for older people in Scotland that day. All Care Homes will also receive a training DVD, which is aligned to the resource.

What is Managing Falls and Fractures in Care Homes for Older People; a good practice self-assessment resource?

The good practice self-assessment is a working resource which will help staff in care homes to assess how well falls prevention and management and the prevention of fractures is being addressed in their service. It aims to provide the answers to many of the questions care home managers have, and can also act as an educational tool for new or existing care home staff. It provides practical help, guidance and tools and signposts to resources available on-line. It is recommended that the resource is used along with regularly reviewed timed actions plans.

The good practice self-assessment resource comprises:

•         An introduction to the topic of falls and fractures in care homes
•         Self assessment guidance and form
•         Information, guidance and tools to help improve care.
