Coming up next month, in collaboration with the Scottish Human Rights Commission, the announcement of free training and awareness raising courses relating to the care and support of older people.
Supported by Scottish Care (through the Workforce Initiative), the Scottish Human Rights Commission has developed training and awareness raising materials relating to the care and support of older people, Care about Rights?
Individuals working as care managers or trainers in the care home or care at home/housing support sectors are about to participate in a two day training for trainers course (8/9 and 14/15 September) which will prepare them as trainers in human rights within a care setting.
The course will cover the basics of the human rights framework and relates this to applying human rights principles in the delivery of care and support. The project is also supported by the Care Commission.
Those who undertake this course are being asked to commit two further days in total of their time (between October and December 2010) to train others within their respective organisations, and beyond to others in the care sector, using the training materials provided on the course.
Developed over the past year with support from Scottish Care, the Care about Rights? package provides a range of materials and information, giving a basic knowledge and an overview of human rights legislation for individuals who use care and support services, their family members or others who care for them; for those who work within the care sector, for example in care homes or in care at home/housing support services; and for those whose job involves making policies that affect the care sector, commission care services or regulate care services. The materials include short visual film clips to illustrate where a human rights based approach could be applied in practice.
The training will be delivered to around 800 people by December 2010, and DVDs of the films and materials will be distributed to every registered care service provider for older people’s care and support in Scotland. The entire Care about Rights? training package will then be available as an online resource through the Workforce Initiative website from January 2011. The impact of the project will be independently evaluated over the next 24 months.
Information on the roll-out of the awareness raising will be available through the Workforce Initiative website; the monthly e-Bulletins and through Newsflashes over the next two months, both sent to all private sector care services.
