Education Facilitators for Care Homes

The Scottish Government are funding 14 posts for Education Facilitators to work with nurse mentors in care homes for older people.  The posts are funded for a two year period or until the 31 March 2012.

Background
The role has been established as part of the Scottish Government Health Directorates' Delivery Group for student recruitment and retention. There will be (14) post holders in total working across Scotland. The post holders will work primarily with care homes for older people and be managed within NHS health board geographical areas, linking closely with the Higher Education Institutions. The key contacts for the care home sector will be the care home managers and the mentors (nurses).

Job Purpose
The purpose of the Education Facilitator (care homes) is to work with mentors in the care homes, primarily for older people, to enhance the learning experience of student nurses on practice placements. This will be achieved by providing support to mentors through education and development activities and contributing to the development of the care setting as a positive learning environment which promotes a values based, person centred approach to care and learning.

The Education Facilitator role in care homes has the potential to enhance cross sector working complementing the Practice Education infrastructure that already exists within the territorial health boards across Scotland.

The principle aims of the role are to :

•Enhance the quality of the learning environment to ensure the education and development needs of student nurses, registered nurses and support staff are addressed and supported within the care home setting
•Contribute to the quality of care provided for older people in care homes through signposting practice learning for nurses and support staff
•Support the development of both new and experienced mentors and those in wider practice education support roles
•Contribute to collaborative working between the care homes, the NHS and  Higher Education Institutions (HEI's)
•Maximise the contribution of care home placements to the development of future nursing workforce
Where are we now?

Currently, three health boards have advertised the posts (NHS Lanarkshire, Tayside and Ayrshire and Arran). The adverts have been widely circulated across the care home sector.
