Celebrating 2012 and beyond with the residential and care sector.
Introduction
The Go for Gold 2012 Challenge is an exciting partnership between the BHF National Centre for Physical Activity and Health at Loughborough University (BHF NC) and the National Association for Providers of Activities for Older People (NAPA).
The partnership is designed to involve professionals and residents in the residential and care sector to take part in the legacy celebrations offered by the London 2012 Olympic Games and the World Congress on Active Ageing in Glasgow, both to be staged in the summer of 2012 and the 2014 Commonwealth games also in Glasgow. The Go for Gold challenge falls within the BHF NC programme of Active Ageing Events. (see below).
Each year, NAPA hosts an annual challenge award for its’ membership and in 2012, Go for Gold will form the cornerstone of NAPA’s annual challenge event and take the form of a 1 day physical activity challenge event involving residents and staff working in the residential/care sector
The Go for Gold 2012 Challenge 2012
The Go for Gold 2012 Challenge will be extended for all those living and working in the residential care sector to become involved in one of 4 activity challenges.
The Senior Games Challenge- The desire to have fun, compete with others and the will to win survives into later life - host your own senior games festival with a variety of competitive games and events.
The Dance With Me challenge - Just how many different dancers and different dances could be involved in tripping the light fantastic?
The Walk With Me challenge- How many miles (real or virtual) can you accumulate during your challenge, from Land’s End to John O’Groats or round the World?
Plan your own physical activity challenge - For those (groups or individuals) who may find these challenges daunting, then participants are invited to create their own challenge events involving physical activity
Go for Gold 2012 Challenge resources and support activity
In January 2012, the BHF NC and NAPA will provide a Go for Gold 2012 Challenge Action Pack designed to assist participating organisations with different challenge ideas and activities. In the spring of 2012, the programme partners will host a series of UK wide Go for Gold dissemination and planning events designed to target those who work with and support the residential and care sector.
Through its’ membership and extensive network NAPA will promote and coordinate the Go for Gold Challenge including the management of entries and, database work.
Hosting of Going for Gold awards celebration event will be held in September 2012 where Challenge winners will be presented with awards.
Active Support for Go for Gold 2012 Challenge. In addition to the two lead agencies identified above, the Go for Gold 2012 Challenge has the active support of the College of Occupational Therapy, AGILE (Physiotherapy Special Interest Group working with Older People), the National Care Forum, Social Care and Social Work Improvement Scotland, Age Scotland, Scottish Government, BUPA, Vida Wellness, Vitalyz and Later Life Training. Additional support is being sought from interested parties and potential partners across the UK.
