Health Protection Scotland (HPS) has annouced that it is currently recruiting volunteer care homes to participate in an exciting European- wide Healthcare Associated Infection (HAI) Prevalence Survey.
HAI’s are infections acquired in hospitals or other healthcare settings such as care homes or other long term care facilities where healthcare is increasingly delivered. A progressively aged population, advances in medical treatments and rising public and media expectations all contribute to making these infections an important issue for the European Union (EU).
As a result of the above, the European Centers for Disease Control (ECDC) commissioned an expert advisory panel entitled Healthcare Associated Infections in Long Term Care Facilities (HALT) in order to explore the possibility of conducting HAI prevalence survey’s within care home settings.
HPS have agreed to collaborate with ECDC/HALT in order to participate in the 1st planned EU-wide care home prevalence survey which is due to be conducted in May 2010.
HPS will provide full support, full training, training materials and data collection tools to any care home (regardless of numbers of residents residing within the care home)wishing to volunteer for this study.
