There are a number of awards in Scotland now available for supervisors in care home, care at home, housing support and day care services, which are designed to meet the SSSC registration requirements for Supervisors.

Open University: Managing in the Workplace
This is an award which has arisen from a partnership between Scottish Care and the Open University in Scotland. It comprises 30 Credits at SCQF Level 7, specifically targeted at Supervisors in a social care setting. A successful pilot was completed in June 2009 with 16 successful candidates receiving their certificates at an event held in Stirling. A full review of the initial pilot has now been undertaken and the award has been amended to take account of the learnings gained. A course which commenced in November 2009 is currently underway.

This course could also be considered for the development of first line supervisors who do not have to meet the SSSC registration requirement.
SQA: Professional Development Award in Health and Social Care Supervision
The new SQA Professional Development Award (PDA) in Health and Social Care Supervision is a 16 credit award at SCQF Level 7. It has been designed specifically to meet the SSSC requirements for supervisors in adult care. It contains two Higher National Units, ‘Supervise the Protection of People’ and ‘Supervise People.’ Basic information about the award is on the SQA website click here to view. The Workforce Initiative has joined with SCOTVQ to launch this exciting new award and it will roll out throughout Scotland from end November 2009.
There is no fixed date for the commencement of the PDA courses with SCOTVQ once a group of candidates is identified the inductions will be arranged and the formal training sessions organised. Ideally groups of between 8 and 12 candidates are sought; these do not have to be from a single provider.
